Is mango high in histamine?

Mango is likely low in histamine, though it has not been tested for it: 21 mangoes in one study had very little putrescine, and mango is not on a 2021 chart of foods excluded by 10 published diets.

How freshness and processing change it

We found no study of amines as mangoes ripen or are stored. Cut mango left standing gives bacteria time to act, so cut it close to when you eat it, or freeze it. Dried mango, mango juice and nectar, tinned mango and mango chutney were not measured.

Fresh mango0Low

Histamine not measured; putrescine 0.9 mg/kg in 21 samples. (estimate)

Plain frozen mango0Low

Not measured; freezing slows bacterial activity. (estimate)

Why we rate mango 0

Mango has not been tested for histamine in any study we use, so we label it "not measured". The closest data come from one study, collected in a 2018 review by a University of Barcelona team, that tested 21 mangoes alongside other tropical fruits. It reported putrescine only. Mangoes averaged 0.9 mg/kg, ranging from none to 2.7 mg/kg, which is among the lowest putrescine figures for any fruit in the review. In the same study guava averaged 1 mg/kg, pineapple 1.1 mg/kg, papaya 11 mg/kg and passion fruit 17.9 mg/kg, so mango was the lowest of its set.

Mango also stays out of the arguments that put other tropical fruits on avoid lists. It is not on the 2021 review's chart of foods excluded by ten published low-histamine diets, and it is not named in the lists of suggested "histamine liberators" in our sources, unlike papaya and pineapple.

We rate mango 0, "low", as an estimate. For foods without histamine data we look at how they are made and stored. Fresh mango is not fermented, aged or a stored protein food, the usual routes for histamine to build up, and its putrescine is low. Fruit in general is low as well: a 2020 review pooled 136 fruit samples from the Spanish market and found an average of 0.07 mg/kg of histamine, with no sample above 2.51 mg/kg, although it does not say whether mangoes were among them.

The estimate covers fresh mango and plain frozen mango. Dried mango, mango juice and nectar, tinned mango in syrup and mango chutney were not measured. Chutney is usually made with vinegar and spices, so it is a different food altogether. If you are in the strict phase of an elimination diet, mango is easy to test on its own when you and your dietitian start reintroducing foods.

Questions about mango and histamine

Is mango low histamine?

Probably. Mango has not been tested for histamine, but one study of 21 mangoes found very little putrescine (0.9 mg/kg), and mango is not on the 2021 chart of foods excluded by ten published diets.

Is dried mango high in histamine?

Dried mango was not measured in the studies we use, so we do not rate it. Our estimate covers fresh and plain frozen mango.

Evidence behind this page

  • One study of 21 mangoes found putrescine averaging 0.9 mg/kg (not detected to 2.7) and did not report histamine (2018 review, Table 2). 1
  • In the same study, putrescine averaged 1 mg/kg in guava, 1.1 mg/kg in pineapple, 11 mg/kg in papaya and 17.9 mg/kg in passion fruit (2018 review, Table 2). 1
  • Mango is not on the 2021 review's chart of foods excluded by ten published low-histamine diets. 2
  • Across 136 fruit samples from the Spanish market, histamine averaged 0.07 mg/kg, and the highest single sample had 2.51 mg/kg. 4
  • Histamine in food forms mainly when bacteria decarboxylate histidine, so it builds up in spoiled and fermented foods. 2
