Is peach high in histamine?
Peach is low in histamine: two peaches tested in Spain had none, putrescine was low in them and in another study, and peaches are not on a 2021 chart of foods excluded by 10 published diets.

What each source says
| Source | Verdict | What it says, in our words |
|---|---|---|
| Lab measurements, Spain 1 | Measured | No detectable histamine, tyramine or cadaverine in 2 peaches; putrescine averaged 1.92 mg/kg. |
| Another study in the 2018 review 1 | Two peach samples averaged 0.35 mg/kg of putrescine; histamine was not reported. | |
| 10 published low-histamine diets (2021 review) 2 | Peaches are not on the review's chart of excluded foods. | |

Measured histamine
| Food tested | Samples | Histamine | Other amines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peaches sold in Spain 1 (Table 2) | 2 | not detected | putrescine mean 1.92 mg/kg (1.82–2.02); tyramine and cadaverine not detected |
mg/kg = milligrams of histamine per kilogram of food. "Not detected" means below the laboratory's detection limit.
How freshness and processing change it
The two peaches tested were fresh, shop-bought fruit, and we found no study of amines as peaches ripen or are stored. Tinned peaches, peach nectar and dried peaches were not measured. Fresh peaches bruise and go soft quickly; eat them ripe, and freeze slices if you have more than you can use.
No histamine in 2 samples; putrescine 1.92 mg/kg. (measured)
Not measured; freezing slows bacterial activity. (estimate)
Why we rate peach 0
Peaches have little to say about histamine, because so little has been found in them. A University of Barcelona team tested two peaches sold in Spain for four amines. There was no histamine, no tyramine and no cadaverine. Putrescine, the amine behind many fruit exclusions, averaged 1.92 mg/kg. Another study collected in the team's 2018 review tested two more peach samples and found even less putrescine, 0.35 mg/kg, and almost no cadaverine; it did not report histamine. For scale, oranges in the Spanish survey averaged 91.24 mg/kg of putrescine.
The weak point is the number of samples. Two peaches is as small a set as sits behind any fruit on this site, and both came from Spanish shops. A wider look at fruit supports the picture rather than replacing it: a 2020 review from the same group pooled 136 fruit samples from the Spanish market and found an average of 0.07 mg/kg of histamine, with no sample above 2.51 mg/kg.
Peaches also stay out of the arguments that keep other fruits off low-histamine lists. They are not on the 2021 review's chart of foods excluded by ten published diets, and none of our sources lists them as a suspected "histamine liberator" or as rich in putrescine.
We rate fresh peaches 0, "low". The measurements and the lists point the same way, and we would revisit the rating if a larger survey found otherwise. Nectarines, a smooth-skinned form of peach, were not measured separately, and neither were tinned peaches in syrup or juice, peach nectar or dried peaches, so the rating does not cover them. Fresh peaches bruise and go soft quickly. Eat them ripe and fresh, and freeze slices if you have more than you can use in a few days; plain frozen peach slices were not measured, but freezing slows the bacterial activity that forms histamine in food.
Questions about peach and histamine
Are peaches low histamine?
Yes, on the evidence we have, although it is thin. Two peaches tested in Spain had no histamine and little putrescine, and peaches are not on the 2021 chart of foods excluded by ten published diets.
Are canned peaches high in histamine?
Tinned peaches were not measured in the studies we use, so we do not rate them. Our rating covers fresh peaches.
Evidence behind this page
- Two peaches sold in Spain had no detectable histamine, tyramine or cadaverine; putrescine averaged 1.92 mg/kg. 1
- Another study of two peach samples reported putrescine at 0.35 mg/kg and cadaverine below 0.10 mg/kg. 1
- Across 136 fruit samples from the Spanish market, histamine averaged 0.07 mg/kg, and the highest single sample had 2.51 mg/kg. 4
