Is vodka high in histamine?

Vodka is probably low in histamine, but it has never been properly measured: it is a distilled spirit, not a fermented drink like wine. Its alcohol still slows histamine breakdown, so it is not a free pass.

Mostly low

Fine for many people. Rated 1 of 3. Not measured: rated from how it is made and stored.

How freshness and processing change it

Vodka keeps indefinitely, and nothing in how it is stored is known to add histamine. What you mix it with matters more: juices, cordials and tonic each have their own histamine question, and flavoured vodkas and vodka-based liqueurs contain other ingredients.

Plain vodka1Mostly low

Not measured. Distilled, so little histamine is expected; the alcohol effect is unchanged. (estimate)

Flavoured vodka or vodka-based liqueur2Moderate

Not measured. One study found histamine in more than half of the liqueurs it tested. (estimate)

Why we rate vodka 1

Vodka is often named as the lowest-histamine alcohol. The honest position is that no study we could find has measured histamine in vodka. A 2025 review of alcohol and migraine says that very little has been published on amines in spirits at all, and its summary table has no histamine figures for them. This page is therefore an estimate, and it says why.

The reasoning starts with how vodka is made. Wine and beer get their histamine from microbes during fermentation, and it stays in the drink you pour. Vodka also starts as a fermented liquid, from grain, potatoes or other starches, but that liquid is then distilled: it is heated, and the alcohol-rich vapour is collected and condensed. A 2016 study describes biogenic amines, the family histamine belongs to, as non-volatile, which is the reason to expect little of it to carry over into the spirit. That is a reason, not a measurement.

The alcohol does not change. Alcohol and its breakdown product, acetaldehyde, compete with histamine for aldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme the body uses for both, and a 2020 review lists alcohol among the causes of a temporary, reversible DAO deficiency. A vodka may bring little histamine of its own, but it can make the histamine in your meal harder to clear, and that effect is the same whichever drink the alcohol comes from.

Flavoured vodkas and liqueurs are a different product. A study reported in a 2022 review found histamine in more than half of the liqueurs it tested, made with fruit, herbs, coffee, honey or milk.

We rate plain vodka 1, "mostly low", as an estimate, and flag it as affecting histamine breakdown. Mixers carry their own histamine, so a vodka and soda water is a different drink from a vodka with orange juice. Whether any alcohol fits your plan is a question for your doctor or dietitian.

Questions about vodka and histamine

Is vodka low in histamine?

Probably, but it has not been measured. It is distilled, and the amines that include histamine are described as non-volatile, so little should carry over. The alcohol still slows histamine breakdown.

Is any alcohol low in histamine?

Wine and beer were measured and are moderate. Spirits such as vodka and gin have almost no published data; they are distilled, so we rate them 1 as an estimate. Every alcoholic drink carries the same alcohol effect.

Evidence behind this page

  • Very little has been published on biogenic amine levels in spirits; a 2025 review's summary table reports no histamine data for spirits. 1
  • Spirits have the highest alcohol content of alcoholic drinks and are made by distilling fermented products or by macerating raw materials in ethyl alcohol. 5
  • Biogenic amines, the group of compounds that includes histamine, are non-volatile. 6
  • A study reported in a 2022 review found histamine in more than half of the industrial and homemade liqueurs it tested, which were made with fruit, herbs, coffee, honey or milk. 5
  • Alcohol and its metabolite acetaldehyde compete with histamine for aldehyde dehydrogenase, and DAO deficiency can be a temporary and reversible condition caused by substances such as alcohol. 3
